There are few things more evocative than a V12 sports car, but they are becoming rarer and rarer. Fortunately, Aston Martin has stayed true to its heritage and still makes 12-cylinder cars.

The fastest one is the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S, which is now fitted with a new Sportshift gearbox and adaptive damping for the first time. The engine’s been tuned as well- and it’s the fastest production car Aston has ever made.

But how does it fare against arguably the most focused track-based sports car money can buy: the Porsche 911 GT3?

To find out we took the new 991 GT3 to take on the Aston Martin in an Auto Express video track battle.

Now into its 3rd generation ever since its launch in 1999, the GT3 has been the benchmark for handling precision. The new 991 generation has 469bhp and 440Nm or torque from its 3.8-litre flat-six engine. For the first time it comes equipped with a PDK dual-clutch gearbox.

The Aston Martin V12 Vantage S squeezes Aston’s biggest engine into their smallest and most focused sports car. With 565bhp and 620 Nm of torque, the V12 produces more power than the Porsche, but the Aston weighs 235kg more than the lightweight 911 – and for the first time, the V12 comes equipped with Aston’s Sportshift automated manual gearbox.

With soaking wet tarmac and near-freezing temperatures the cars faced the toughest of challenges – but which one came out on top?

Well, the new 911 GT3 exceeded our expectations. The engine is astonishing, the chassis is equally capable and the PDK gearbox has been improved and it’s perfectly suited to this type of car.

The Aston is great too – the V12 engine is packed with character and it has a playful chassis. There’s also no doubting how stunning it looks, but against the stopwatch in wet conditions, the Porsche was 1.5 seconds a lap quicker – and in our dry practice laps it was a full 4 seconds faster than the Aston Martin.

There really isn’t any loser here. We’re glad that both of these sports cars exist and it’s been a privilege to drive them.

  1. That colour on the Aston Martin is amazing!

  2. lol 👍

  3. A z06 corvette is faster than the Aston

  4. 100hp more, still slower.

  5. Not a single GTA V reference, huh, well whaddya know.

  6. Who the fuck is this nerdy looking geek guy driving my fuckn cars..

  7. Ummmm the Aston is a GT car as are all Aston’s and not "sports cars". 🙂 Not really a fair comparison IMHO.

  8. when aston get their amg engines then we can do a comparison….for now the gt3 must be put against the mercedes amg gt s

  9. The Vantage has been in production since 2005. That’s a long generation for a single model. Of course the current GT3 is faster. It was faster even in the previous generation.

  10. I have a 997 cabriolet and the Vantage V8 spider, I drive in the circuit too and the Aston give me 10 times more fun than the Porsche. When I drive the Porsche it’s like to drive a normal car 🙁 when I drive the Aston I feel todrive a real unic sport car 😉 imho

  11. I am not a porsche fan. But Porsche is a way better car in this case. But the V12 Vantage S is not a track car, it should not be compared to each other. Its more comfy then the GT3, It is more practical, GT3 is hardcore. Its very very fast and track focused. Vantage Looks stunning, and its more focused on the luxury part. Either way, both great cars but I’ll take the Vantage over beetle pls

  12. I’m mad that they even they even dared to compare the GT3 to that ancient tub of lard. The GT3 is an exquisite piece of machinery, an engineering masterpiece if you may. The Aston is a fat, lazy and unreliable car with an ancient Ford v12.

  13. I’ve been a Porsche fanatic for most of my life, but I’ve gotta say Astons are sexy as hell.

  14. ok, the V12 is so sexy… but that GT3 is just so amazing… so close love both of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Damn, the GT3 actually sounds better than the V12 Vantage too!

  16. Jesus H. Christ!!! Does it ever NOT rain in the fucking UK? It’s to the point where it doesn’t even make sense to test cars there anymore or even watch these reviews. What real world, useful information is gleaned from these battles? Is it at all realistic to imagine someone coughing up 150k for one of these cars and then going out and testing it’s wet road performance? And the way a car, especially a performance car, performs in the wet usually says precious little about how it will perform on a dry track. Mildly entertaining but ultimately useless.

  17. si

  18. Vantage all the way……
911’s glorified Beetle look has got to go.

  19. Next time, turn on sport mode at least, you will see more improvements, in suspension, shifts, throttle, steering, you basically tested a v12v in normal mode.

  20. No one expects Aston Martin to win a comparo.

  21. …but the Aston is great too…:)…Greetings from Germany

  22. If given the choice of which one to use on a track day, I’d blindly choose the Porsche. But given the choice of buying one? The Aston. Preferably the regular V12, or even the V8; the fewer spoilers, diffusers, inlets and what not more it has, the better the Vantage looks. It’s an elegant design, and should not be ruined by putting flaps everywhere. Apart from that, the Aston is better looking, more spacious and better to live with every day.

This is a matter of taste, though; I’ve never been a 911 fan. I see them too often, they’re not special enough for me.

  23. i am so getting the white one

  24. Better looks(in my opinion), smaller engine and yet smaller time! I have always loved Porsche and this still my favourite model.

  25. How stupid are these videos!!!!!! Who goes balls out in a sports car in water???? What a stupid way to test a front engine rear drive powerful car like the AM. Test the cars the way owners drive them! Hard in the dry, not the rain! Waste of time!

  26. GREAT GREAT GREAT REVIEW !!! THANK YOU .

  27. As good as the Porsche is on paper and in practicality, I’m not one to spend over 200k on a sports car to get an extremely well made VW. I want something that feels more special to drive on the motorway/interstate and the Aston gives that extra bit in terms of the "specialty" department over the Porsche.

  28. 991 looks way better and performs way better

  29. GT3

  30. 911 GT3 has legendary hallmarks for a reason. I’m surprised new Nuremberg ribg times haven’t been attempted with each updated iteration of this exotic on a cold track or moist warm conditions

Even this time of the year a time below original recorded data is absolutely possible

  31. For such a track-honed car with a quicker gearbox, higher revs and over 200kgs lighter than a make which has essentially just been making fast luxury cars for…well, ever; I was expecting more than just 1.5 seconds quicker

  32. The funny thing is my dad owns a GT3

  33. GT3 the most focused track car you can buy? Is he retarded. Even taking actual track day cars out of the argument, Porshe’s own GT3RS is much more focused, even the old one.

  34. whats the use of having sports car in UK it always rain there

  35. What is this?! The Cayenne Turbo S did better than both of these 2! According to Auto Express’s Video on that! Impossible…There’s a fault somewhere…..Rain wouldnt really make that much of a difference

  36. Porsche> Aston Martin

  37. what about a GT3 convertible
    lol

  38. Uhm. You can buy 2 GT3’s for the price of the Aston Martin. But I’d rather have a Mustang, F-250 and Navigator for the price of the GT3 : /

  39. The aston martin is a beautiful car, but the gt3 is better, indeed….

  40. "Listen to that engine!" he says, talking over the engine pretty much the whole time…

  41. The GT3 is a magnificent piece of engineering. And I love the timeless, sexy look!

  42. Please tell me you guys aren’t actually considering those lap times on a fully damp track with water puddles all over it, then go on to compare it to the dry lap-times of the 650S and other vehicles. Someone tell me this is a joke, this whole review is pointless.

  43. Wow I would love to have the gt3 pure exctasy

  44. I was never a fan of 911’s because of the looks. The proportions were just not right. The 997 was the first 911 I liked. And now – Porsche really nailed it with the 991 design. For the first time I must say that a 911 looks better than an Aston.

  45. Damn this guy is a beast of a driver… holy shit

  46. I overtook a Vantage GT4 in my ’08 997 GT3 cup car during a mixed race. That car looked really unstable in corners. It had way too much body roll, and it’s tail happy (but this I think was the driver)
By the way, what’s up with the tachometer rotating counter clockwise!

  47. The GT3 is hands down the milestone for track cars. No other car gets compared to such a variety of cars, and still manages to be the better car!

  48. GT3 is a vastly superior car

  49. Yeah 991 GT3 is good but the new 2015 GTR will destroy it again. All wheel steering vs all wheel drive.

  50. Stu is that you?
